Melaka Facts

The tree and two mouse deers flanked on the sides symbolise the history of the founding of the Melaka Sultanate. Parameswara, the founder of Melaka, witnessed the battle between the mouse deer and his hunting dog while resting under the Melaka tree. He was fascinated by the strength and intelligence of the little mouse deer. Though small in size, the mouse deer was witty and managed to overcome a dog that was bigger than itself. After witnessing the event, Parameswara finally took the decision to set up a base in that place and to name the state Melaka, after the tree which he rested under.

While small, beautiful and fragrant, all of Melaka will be captivated by the different ethnic groups, the history and progress made today.

The star and crescent represent Islam, the official religion of the state and the country. The upper left quarter has a royal blue backdrop with a yellow crescent moon and a yellow five-pointed star. The top right quarter is red and the lower half is white.
